A number of scholars and practitioners are currently using the Community Capitals framework (Flora, Flora and Fey, 2004) in their work. At the 2004 Rural Sociological Society meetings, a number of people expressed interest in learning more about applying the framework, or sharing their own experiences using the framework.

We invite you to join us in Ames, Iowa, on October 11-12, 2004, to share your work, your interest and your questions regarding the community capitals framework as a tool for evaluation, planning, assessment, etc. We will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, October 11, and adjourn at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12.

For those of you using the framework and wanting to share your current work, we invite you to be part of the program by sending information on what you are doing to Mary Emery at . Participants with papers or reports on using the capitals can send them to us for inclusion in the meeting materials. If you are currently involved in community capacity assessments, we invite you to share your approach with us as well.

Specific goals for the working session include:

  • Review strategies for using the community capitals framework in the field and as an evaluation tool.
  • Share insights into current research strategies using the capitals framework.
  • Discuss various approaches to community capacity assessment, particularly those that might lead to opportunities to participate in a common research effort regarding assessment.
