Over
the past 40 years, many distressed neighborhoods and communities
around the country have leveraged their historic capital to create
more cohesive communities and attract new investment. This workshop
will present several case studies of neighborhoods and communities
in the St. Louis region that have developed partnerships with the
University to explore their own history and to utilize that history
to create a greater sense of community and optimism for the future.
The
workshop will describe the university and community resources, the
process of engaging residents in an exploration of public history,
and the products that are being developed to promote historic preservation
and neighborhood stabilization. The speakers will also describe
a new research initiative at the University of Missouri—St.
Louis, exploring the role of historic preservation and public history
as a community revitalization strategy. Outcomes for participants
will include the generation of new ideas and possibilities, sharing
of tools and strategies for integrating public history in community
development work, and concrete examples of products and community
benefits.
