Issues of land use and growth are becoming serious as the county
has a growth rate 3 times the national average. This urban population
with their needs is willing to plan for the future growth while
ensuring the preservation and maintenance of farmland, open spaces,
and natural resources of the county. The Land Use and Growth committee
has developed draft Smart Growth Principles for Brevard County.
These principles have been shared with Brevard Citizens through
six public forums. These forums provided the opportunity for citizens
to provide input on the Smart Growth Principles. Participants were
divided into small working groups to discuss the principles. They
were given the Smart Growth document, a workbook, and an appendix
highlighting comments from previous forums. They were asked if there
were gaps, was there anything unacceptable, and finally will they
be an advocate for Smart Growth in Brevard County. Input collected
from the forums has been merged into the draft Smart Growth principles
that is now being disseminated through out the county. This presentation
will highlight the process utilized in consensus building for Smart
Growth Principles in Brevard County.
