Background
The educational program developed responds to Wisconsin’s
1999 groundbreaking legislation that requires all local communities,
counties and regional planning commissions that make land use decisions
to adopt comprehensive plans by January 1, 2010. This workshop will:

Educate participants on Wisconsin’s comprehensive planning
“Smart Growth” legislation.
- Provide
a case study of the educational resources and process developed
by a local educator in Ozaukee County.

To educate local elected officials on comprehensive planning and
the new state legislation.
- To
educate citizens on comprehensive planning, the new state legislation
and how they can become involved in the planning process.

government officials (town, village, city and county) and county

Fact sheets, public forums, Web sites, newsletters, plan commissioner
training materials, local government official training workshops
and public participation resources.
Outcomes
- Ozaukee
County and its local communities developed a multi-jurisdictional
comprehensive planning process to comply with the state legislation.
- Ozaukee
County and its local communities received a $408,000 joint multi-jurisdictional
comprehensive planning grant from the Wisconsin Department of
Administration to assist in the planning process.
- Fourteen
out of 15 communities are participating in the countywide planning
process.

The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission has been
contracted to prepare the comprehensive plan.
- A
countywide Citizen Advisory Committee was developed to provide
public participation in the planning process and to assist in
the development of a county public participation plan.
