The workshop session will share with the participants the major programs of the SERA-19 (rural health) project. Three presentors will provide 15 minute overviews of: (1) public policy and education extension programs; (2) community and economic development programs; and (3) an overview of the rural health institute products. Paul McNamara will provide a summary of public policy education programs for state officials and education programs for community level decision-makers. Gerald Doeksen will cover community economic tools such as impact analysis, community engagement, and health service budgets. Health impact analysis will be demonstrated to illustrate how this tool can be used at the state level by policymakers and at the community level for local decisions. A demonstration of health budget studies will be given to illustrate how these can be used at the community level to enhance health services. Bobbi Clarke will present an overview of the health institute materials. The Tools and materials created by the SERA in preparation for the health institute are available for use by state or county extension professionals in any state.

The workshop will be moderated by Rick Maurer. The format will be for a 10-15 minute presentation by each speaker and 5-10 minutes for discussion after each speaker. The idea is to maximize discussion. The tools developed by the SERA are readily useable and transferable across the U.S. Thus, Extension Educators should find this workshop extremely useful.
